Enthalpy/ Equilibrium. Flashcards
Exothermic reactions…
Give off heat
Endothermic reactions…
Take in heat
Breaking bonds take in energy and are
Endothermic
Making bonds gives off energy so is…
Exothermic
What is enthalpy?
Energy difference in a chemical reaction.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the rates of both the forward and backwards reactions are the same. Therefore the amount of product and reactant is the same.
Increase the reactant…
Products shift left - right.
Decrease the reactant…
Reactants shift right - left
Increase the product…
Reactants shift right - left
Decrease product…
Products shift left - right
How does temperature affect equilibrium?
When there is a change in the reaction it tries to return to equilibrium. If the reaction is too hot it will favour the endothermic reaction which takes in heat to cool it down again.
