Enthalpy Definitions Flashcards
Enthalpy Change
The heat energy change measured under conditions of constant pressure.
Mean Bond Enthalpy
The enthalpy change needed to break a covalent bond in a molecule, averaged over a range of different compounds.
Standard Enthalpy of Formation
The enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from it’s constituent elements with all reactants and products in their standard states.
Standard Enthalpy of Combustion
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance undergoes complete combustion in excess oxygen under standard conditions with all reactants and products in their standard states.
Hess’ Law
The enthalpy change accompanying a reaction is independent of the route by which the reaction occurs.
