Enthalpy changes (9.1) Flashcards
What is enthalpy?
A measure of heat energy in an atom, ion or chemical system.
What does H stand for?
Enthalpy
Can enthalpy itself be measured?
No, only enthalpy changes can.
What is the general equation for enthalpy changes?
Enthalpy change = products - reactants
If an enthalpy change is negative what kind of reaction took place?
Exothermic
If an enthalpy change is positive what kind of reaction took place?
Endothermic
What is heat energy transferred to when enthalpy of a product changes?
-The system (reactant or product)
-The surroundings
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur.
What kind of activation energy makes a reaction rapid?
A smaller activation energy due to the energy needed already being readily available.
Enthalpy changes can differ depending on conditions. How do chemists combat this?
Using standard conditions
What is enthalpy change’s units usually?
kjmol-1
What is the standard pressure?
101 kPa
What is standard temperature?
298K / 25 degrees Celsius
What is standard concentration?
1 mol dm-3
Do balancing numbers affect enthalpy changes?
Yes
