Enthalpy Change Flashcards
What is enthalpy change of formation?
ΔfH - the enthalpy change when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its constituent elements all products and reactants in their standard states under standard conditions.
What is the enthapy change of atomisation of an element?
ΔatH - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous atoms is formed from an element in its standard states
What is the enthalpy of atomisation of a compound?
ΔatH, is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of a compound in its standard state is converted to gaseous atoms
What is first ionisation energy?
Δie1H - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions is formed from 1 mole of gaseous atoms
What is second ionisation energy?
Δie2H - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous 2+ ions are formed from 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions
What is first electron affinity?
Δea1H - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous 1- ions is formed from 1 mole of gaseous atoms
What is second electron affinity?
Δea2H - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous 2- ions is formed from 1 mole of gaseous 1 - ions.
What is bond disassociation enthalpy?
ΔdissH - the e enthalpy change when all the bonds of the same type in 1 mole of gaseous molecules are broken
What is enthalpy change of hydration?
ΔhydH - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of aqueous ions is formed from 1 mole of gaseous ions
What is enthalpy change of solution?
ΔsolH - is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of solute is dissolved in enough solvent that no further enthalpy change occurs on further dilution.
What is lattice enthalpy of formation?
enthalpy change when one mole of solid ionic lattice is formed from its constituent gaseous ions
What is lattice enthalpy of disassociation?
enthalpy change when when one mole of solid ionic lattice is completely disassociated into its gaseous ions
What is entropy?
randomness/disorder of a system; higher value for entropy = more disordered (J mol-1 K-1)
What is Gibbs free energy?
ΔG = ΔH - TΔS
If G < 0, reaction is feasible. If G = 0, reaction is JUST feasible. If G > 0, reaction is not feasible.
Gibbs free energy is a term that combines the effect of enthalpy and entropy into one number
What is the enthalpy change of combustion?
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burnt in oxygen
