Appeal of the radio?

A

The radio was a modern invention that first appeared in Britain in 1922 and were very affordable to buy.

In 1926, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was set up to run the new national radio service. It both informed people by broadcasting the news and provided various forms of entertainment.

They greatly appealed to families as they could all gather around their ‘wireless sets’ and listed to a wide range of broadcasts as live theatre, popular music, school programmes and comedy.

The radio catered for a wide audience and there was something to appeal to almost everyone.

In 1937, the BBC set up a Welsh service based in Cardiff to cater for the needs of Wales and its people.

Appeal of cinema

A

Cinema was the most popular form of entertainment in the 1930s.

Cinema tickets were very cheap and offered an escape from the harsh realities of life for many people.

The low admission prices meant that even the unemployed could afford the occasional trip to the cinema.

Many villages had cinemas making them very accessible.

Appeal of boxing

A

Boxing was the sport of the working classes and during the 1930s it became very popular.

For many, boxing provided the means to escape their poverty and unemployment.

Local clubs arranged bouts for which the boxes were paid.

Many people aspired to become a champion boxer. Although very few made it, Tommy Farr from Tonypandy did and was known ‘as the man who nearly beat Joe Louis’.

A

Although professional football provided a release from financial worries it suffered during the depression as people had less money for tickets causing many football clubs to leave the football league.

Explain appeal of rugby

A

Rugby was an alternative to football as it was much more affordable.

It provided individuals with something to do each week and also provided them with a chance to support and follow their local teams, improving community spirit.

Sports were even broadcasted on the radio so people could enjoy even if they couldnt attend.
