Entered Apprentice Flashcards
As an entered apprentice, from whence come you
From the lodge of the holy saints John at Jerusalem
What come you here to do?
To learn to subdue my passions and improve myself in masonry
Then I presume you are a mason?
I am so taken and accepted among brothers and fellows
What makes you a mason?
My obligation
How do you know yourself to be a mason?
By having been often tried, never denied and willing to be tried again.
How shall I know you to be a mason?
By certain signs, a token, a word and the perfect point of my entrance
What are the signs?
Right angles, horizontals and perpendiculars.
Give me a sign, what is that
Show sign of the due g
What is a token
A certain friendly and brotherly grip by which masons may know each other in the darkness as well as in the light
Give me a token
What do you conceal
I hele I conceal
All the secrets of masons in masonry except it be from him or them to whom they of right belong.
What is that?
The grip of an entered apprentice
Has it a name?
It has.
Will you give it me?
I did not receive it neither can I so impart it
Where were you first prepared to be a mason?
In my heart
(…First prepared a mason)
Where next?
In a room adjacent to a just and lawfully constituted lodge of masons
How were you prepared
By being divested of metals, neither naked nor clad, barefoot nor shod, hookwinked and a cable tow about my neck in which situation I was conducted to the door of the lodge by a friend whom afterwards I later found to be a brother.
How did you know it to be a door being hoodwinked
By first meeting resistance and afterward gaining admission.
How gained you admission?
By three distinct knocks
What was said to you from within?
Who comes here?
Your answer to who comes here
A poor blind candidate who is desirous of being brought from darkness to light and receiving part of the rights, lights, and benefits of this worshipful lodge erected to God and dedicated to the holy Saints John as many a brother and fellow has done before him
What were you then asked
Your answer
If it was of my own free will and accord if I was duly and truly prepared worthy and well qualified all of which being answered in the affirmative I was asked what further right or benefit I expected to gain admission
By being a man of lawful age and well recommended
