What is benign positional vertigo?
vertigo participated by head movements that lasts seconds-minutes
Caused by loose otoliths in semicircular canals cause abnormal movement of endolymph within canal
What are some causes of vertigo?
labyrinthitis, BPPV, migraine, Meniere’s disease, acoustic neuroma, vestibular failure/insufficiency, MS, head injury, inner ear syphilis, verebrobasilar insufficiency, TIA/stroke, postural hypotension
What is vestibular neuronitis?
sudden attack of vertigo caused by inflammation of vestibular nerve
How do you treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo?
Epley manoevres
What are the two types of vertigo?
Peripheral/vestibular - severe, N&V, hearing loss, tinnitus, nystagmus (hor)
Central - less severe, nystagmus could horizontal or vertical
What are some drugs that can cause vertigo?
gentamicin, diuretics, co-trimoxazole, metronidaole
What is sinusitis?
inflammation of paranasal sinuses, usually viral
- acute or chronic, can be allergic
What are some complications of sinusitis?
draining orifice can be blocked by swollen mucosa which can lead to abscess, cranial osteomyelitis, meningitis
What are acoustic neuromas?
tumour derived from schwann cells of vestibular branch of 8th cranial nerve
- more common in adults and females
What symptoms can acoustic neuromas cause?
vertigo, hearing changes
How do you treat gingivitis?
metronidazole
