What is the Diagnosis?
Ear pain and itching. May be accompanied by discharge from ear and hearing loss.
Ear canal erythematous and oedematous. Pre Auricular pain and swelling
Otitis Externa
What is the Diagnosis?
Unilateral otalgia, severe in some cases. Pyrexia, hearing loss, inflamed bulging tympanic membrane.
Rarely accompanied by neurological symptoms.
Otitis Media
What is the Diagnosis?
Severe unilateral otalgia and fever, suddenly relieved with discharge and blood from affected ear. May have vertigo or hearing loss
Otitis Media + Perforation
What is the Diagnosis?
Ear pain, hearing loss and fever with systemic symptoms. Pinna displaced forwards and boggy post-auricular swelling.
Mastoiditis
Sub-periosteal Abscess
What is the Diagnosis?
Facial pain and purulent rhinorrhoea. Post nasal drip, feeling of nasal obstruction and toothache
Maxillary sinusitis
What is the Diagnosis?
Facial pain and purulent rhinorrhoea. Post nasal drip, feeling of nasal obstruction and toothache .
Proptosis, reduced visual acuity, red colour desaturation, chemosis and impaired eye movements and pupillary reflexes
Ethmoiditis complicated pan-sinusitis
What is the Diagnosis?
Sore throat, swallowing difficulty, swollen tonsils with exudate.
Tonsillitis
What is the Diagnosis?
Sore throat for 3-10 days, swallowing difficulty, hot potato voice. May not be able to examine oropharynx due to trismus but if you do will see deviated uvula and unilateral exudate.
Quinsy / Peritonsillar Abscess
What is the Diagnosis?
Tenderness and oedema of mouth. Submandibular induration. Difficulty swallowing, fever and drooling.

Ludwigs angina
What is the Diagnosis?
Child with neck pain and stiffness. Difficulty swallowing, pyrexia and stridor. Fluctuant hypopharynx
Retropharyngeal Abcess
What is the Diagnosis?
rapidly deteriorating patient with fever, sore throat, drooling, hot potato voice and stridor. Normal oropharynx
