ENT anatomy Flashcards
What are the contents of the internal acoustic meatus?
-the facial nerve (CN VII)
-the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)
-the labyrinthine artery and veins
What are the actions of the obicularis oris?
the obicularis oris acts as a sphincter around the mouth
what is the obicularis oris innervated by?
the obicularis oris is innervated by the facial nerve (CN VII)
What is the actions of the buccinator muscle?
the buccinator muscle assists in aligning a food bolus between the teeth
what is the buccinator muscle innervated by?
the buccinator muscle is innervated by the facial nerve (CN VII)
What is the function of the masseter muscle? and what is it innervated by?
the function of the masseter muscle is closing of the mouth.
it is innervated by CN V3
What is the function of the temporalis? what is it innervated by?
The function of the temporalis is to close the mouth and it is innervated by CN V3
what is the function of the medial pterygoid and what is it innervated by?
the function of the medial pterygoid is to close the mouth and it is innervated by CN V3
what is the function of the lateral pterygoid and what is it innervated by?
the function of the lateral pterygoid is the open the mouth and it is innervated by CN V3.
Describe the extrinsic tongue muscles and their innervation.
-extrinsic tongue muscles control the movement of the tongue within the oral cavity.
-the genioglossus, hyoglossus and styloglossus are innervated by CN XII (the hypoglossal nerve)
-the palatoglossus is innervated by the vagus nerve (CN X)
Describe the intrinsic muscles of the tongue and their innervation.
intrinsic muscles of the tongue affect the shape and size of the tongue
-they are all innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
What is the function of the soft palate?
the function of the soft palate is to elevate and tense in order to prevent food from entering the nasal cavity.
Describe the tensor veli palatini and it’s innervation.
the tensor veli palatini is innervated by CN V3
-its function is to tense the palatine aponeurosis
describe the levator veli palatini
the levator veli palatini is innervated by the vagus nerve and its function is to elevate the palatine aponeurosis
describe he palatopharyngeus muscle.
the palatopharyngeus muscle is innervated by the vagus nerve and its function is to elevate the pharynx and depress the soft palate
describe the palatoglossus muscle.
depresses the soft palate towards the tongue - innervated by the vagus nerve CN X
describe the musculus uvulae.
shortens the uvula - innervated by the vagus nerve CN X
what is the external ear composed of?
-the cartilaginous pinna
-the external acoustic meatus (ends at the tympanic membrane)
describe the external acoustic meatus.
the external acoustic meatus is an osseocartilaginous canal, with lateral 1/3 formed by cartilage and the inner 2/3 formed by the temporal bone.
-it is lined with skin continuous with the pinna.
where does the tympanic membrane lie?
the tympanic membrane lies at the distal end of the external acoustic meatus.
