3 Xray findings of RPA
A
- C2> 7mm (increased prevertebral thickening)
- C6 > 14mm (increased prevertebral thickening)
- loss of normal cervical lordosis due to muscle inflammation
- in infants < 5 years, prevertebral space should not be > 1/2 width of vertebral body
- in children > 5 years, prevertebral space should not be > width of vertebral body @ C2

A
- scalloping
- complete ring enhancement
- irregularity of the abscess wall.

Antimicrobial Treatment for RPA
A
- clindamycin (30mg/kg/day) divided in 4 doses
- if abscess is small < 2 cm, IV abx can be appropriate alone.
- > 2 cm abscess, or persistent fever despite 48 hours of IV abx requires surgical drainage.
