A
  1. C2> 7mm (increased prevertebral thickening)
  2. C6 > 14mm (increased prevertebral thickening)
  3. loss of normal cervical lordosis due to muscle inflammation
  4. in infants < 5 years, prevertebral space should not be > 1/2 width of vertebral body
  5. in children > 5 years, prevertebral space should not be > width of vertebral body @ C2

Antimicrobial Treatment for RPA

A
  1. clindamycin (30mg/kg/day) divided in 4 doses
  2. if abscess is small < 2 cm, IV abx can be appropriate alone.
  3. > 2 cm abscess, or persistent fever despite 48 hours of IV abx requires surgical drainage.
