Ensemble
System with specified parements is replicated many times, allows for an average at a single time point to be calculated
Microcannonical ensemble
N, V, E all common, no energy exchange between systems
Canonical ensemble
N, V, T common among all systems, energy can flow between systems but total energy remains constant

Fluctuations from most probable distribution
Competition between density and probability of states, density of states steeply rises as energy increases but probability to have a given energy decreases exponentially as the energy increases
