Single Indicator
a statistical measure concerning only one aspect of development
Composite Indicator
a statistical measure that examines several aspects of development to generate a single value/measure
Economic indicator
a statistic that helps assess the performance of an economy
Social indicator
a characteristic or statistic that refers to the quality of life
Income inequality
A ratio of the earnings of the richest to the earnings of the poorest.
Gini coefficent
a measure of inequality which considers how far wealth
Open border
allows people to move freely from one nation to another with little or no restrictions
Deregulation
the reduction in rules which means that any foreign business can set up in the UK and bring its overseas staff with it
FDI
investment made by an overseas company or organisation into a company or organisation which is based in another country
Diaspora
The dispersion or spread of a group of people from their original homeland. This also facilitates the spread of culture.
Censorship
restriction on access to ideas and information
Protectionism
Economic policy of shielding an economy from imports.
Cultural identity
Ones belief in belonging to a group or certain cultural aspect
Local sourcing
seeking to source from nearby suppliers where practical
Fair trade
an independent not-for-profit organisation which aims to return a bigger proportion of the revenue to producers or growers
ethical consumption
the conscious and deliberate decision to make certain consumption choices due to personal moral beliefs and values
Pressure group
a group of people who try to raise awareness of issues and try to affect the views and actions of people and organisations
Recycling
the separation, collection, processing, marketing, and reuse of unwanted material
Ecological footprint
a measure of the land area and water reserves that a population needs in order to produce what it consumes (and absorb the waste it generates), using current technology
Keep Britain Tidy
a UK-based independent environmental charity. The organisation campaigns to reduce litter, improve local places and prevent waste
MDGs
Millennium Development Goals - 8 goals concerning human development in the developing world. Set in 2000 and superseded by the SDGs in 2015.
Absolute poverty
Income below $1.25 a day - not enough to meet basic human needs.
Relative poverty
Income is too low to maintain average standard of living in a particular society.
HDI
a measure of development which takes into account life expectancy, education and GDP for every country and converts them into a value between 0 and 1
Nationalism
a political movement focused on national independence or the abandonment of policies that are viewed by some people as a threat to national sovereignty or national culture.
Consumer society
A society in which the buying and selling of goods and services is the most important social and economic activity.
Water footprint
A measure of the amount of water used in the production and transport to market of food and commodities (also known as virtual water)
Carbon footprint
the amount of carbon dioxide produced by an individual or activity
Transition town
A settlement where individuals and businesses have adopted ‘bottom-up’ initiatives with the aim of making their community more sustainable and less reliant on global trade.
Food miles
The distance food travels from a farm to the consumer
