Enquiry Question 3 Flashcards
Why are sea levels rising?
Ice caps and glaciers are melting,
Thermal expansion - as the sea heats up it expands and takes up more room.
What happened to average temperatures and sea levels between 1880 and 2012?
Temperatures rose by 0.85*C and the sea levels rose by 20cm.
What is eustatic sea level change?
When the sea level itself rises or falls.
What is isostatic sea level change?
When the land rises or falls, relative to the sea.
What is a raised beach?
Where the land has risen as a result of isostatic recovery and caused former shoreline platforms and their beaches were raised above the present sea level.
What are fossil cliffs?
The remains of eroded cliff lines can be found behind the raised beach, with wave-cut notches and caves as evidence of past marine erosion.
What is a ria?
Sheltered winding inlets with irregular shorelines from when valleys in a dissected upland are are flooded.
What is a fjord?
When deep glacial troughs are flooded by a rise in sea level.
What is a fjard?
A flooded inlet with a low rocky bank on either side formed by a past-glacial drowning of glaciated lowland rocky terrain.
