Enlightenment
Age of reason. The idea that man could use logic to reason and solve social problems. Resulted in people questioning the ideas of the government and absolute monarchs.
John Locke
Belief in natural rights. People form governments to protect their rights.
Natural Rights
Rights all humans are born with. Life, Liberty and Property.
Thomas Hobbes
People need a strict government to control them because people are naturally cruel and selfish. Life without rules would be nasty, brutish and short.
Montesquieu
Belief in the separation of powers and the use of a system of checks and balances
Voltaire
Belief in freedom of speech. Fought for tolerance, reasons and freedom or religion.
Rousseau
Wrote the social contract and believed people are naturally good but corrupted by the evils of society.
Censorship
Government and churches tried to suppress enlightenment ideas. Many writers were thrown into prison and their books were burned and banned.
Enlightened Despots
Absolute rules who used enlightenment ideas to help them reform society. Ex. Theresa, Joseph II and Catherine the Great.
Nationalism
Loyalty and devotion to a nation.
