Alliteration
The repetition of the same letter or sound occurs at the beginning of each word continuously.
Allegory
a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
Allusion
Something that refers to a person, place or thing of historical, cultural and literary terms. It’s trying to make a comparison in a reader’s mind.
Archetype
also known as a universal symbol, archetype is a typical character, action or situation which reflects common experiences shared by a human race, culture, or society.
Connotation
the associations and feelings one may have with a word.
Denotation
the actual meaning of a word; a definition.
Dialogue
a conversation between at least 2 people.
Diction
the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing.
Dystopia
an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic; the opposite of a utopia.
Epiphany
a moment of sudden realization
Euphemism
a nice way to say something not so nice. It is less troubling and disturbing.
3 types of Figurative Language
Language that as other meanings attached to the primary meaning
Metaphor – A comparison that isn’t clearly stated and relies on context more than other forms comparisons.
Simile – A comparison that is stated through the use of is, as, or like.
Personification – describing an object or non-living thing as if it was alive thing
Flashback
An interruption of the chronological sequence, of an event that occurred earlier. Writers use this to insert a past event or give background information to the current events.
Foil
a contrast in character, action or setting
Foreshadowing
a warning or hint as to what may come in the future of a text
Formal Language
the type of words and tone achieved to make writing official, professional, or academic sounding.
Genre
a category of artistic work, generally related to music, literature, or art; the works within a genre are characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
Hyperbole
deliberate exaggeration, or over exaggeration, for the point of emphasis.
Illusion
A false perception or a contradictoy statement
Imagery
Use of descriptive language to represent an object, action or a scene; imagery is used to give the reader a better image of the world which is displayed in the piece of literature.
