Round Character
Highly developed character with many developed traits.
Character
Individuals who participate in the action on a literary work.
Flat Character
A character that exhibits few traits and not well developed.
Static Character
One who remains the same throughout a story.
Dynamic Character
Changes throughout the story.
Indirect Characterization
An author indirectly tells you about them. Learn about the character through physical description. Seeing the people I’m with, what I look like, things I say, and my actions.
Direct Characterization
Author tells exactly what that character is like.
Theme
Under lying message about the meaning of life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader.
Usually not stated directly but must be inferred.
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature that is involved in the central conflict.
Antagonist
The principle character of force and opposition of the protagonist.
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work.
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and the arrangement of the words in sentences.
Plot
The sequence of events in a story.
Setting
Time and place of the action of the work of literature.
Foil
Characters that are opposites.
Foreshadowing
Using hints and clues to reveal events that will happen later on in the story.
