Metaphor
The counterpart to the main character and source of a story’s main conflict
Antagonist
The atmosphere created by a text; the feeling induced in the reader
Mood
When the intended meaning of a word or phrase is not stated clearly and is instead
conveyed through covert, indirect means
Connotation
When inanimate objects are given human characteristics
Personification
Any use of words where the intended meaning differs from the actual literal meaning of the
words themselves
Figurative language
When a specific word, phrase, or structure is used several times, to emphasize a particular
idea
Repetition
Language which describes something in detail, using words to create sensory stimulation,
including visuals and sounds
Imagery
When future events or the outcome of the story is suggested by the author before it
happens
Foreshadowing
When words used in quick succession begin with letters belonging to the same sound
group (Ex: Wicked Witch of the West)
Alliteration
The author’s means of conveying to the reader a character’s personality, life history,
values, physical attributes, etc.
Characterization
When characters speak to one another; may often be used to substitute for exposition
Dialogue
The author’s attitude toward the subject
Tone
The identity of the narrative voice; the person or entity through whom the reader
experiences the story
Point of view
The main character in a story; the one with whom the reader is meant to identify
Protagonist
