Metaphor
Comparison without using like or as
Imagery
Descriptive language that can function as a way for the reader to better imagine the world of the piece of literature. Draws on the five senses
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows more than the characters
Antagonist
A character, group of characters, or other force that presents an obstacle or is in direct conflict with the main character
verbal irony
When the character says something opposite of what they mean
Flat characterization
A character who only has one kind of personality trait or characteristic
Hyperbole
Exaggeration
External conflict
Character finds self in in a struggle with outside forces that hamper his progress
Foil
Character opposite from another (main), used to highlight a characteristic the other character has
Could be a sidekick
Personification
Giving characteristics to inanimate objects, making them feel like people
Symbol
Filling objects with a certain meaning, different from it’s original function
Protagonist
Main character
May be more than one
Tone
Attitude of a write toward a subject or audience
Situational irony
What happens is opposite of what is expected or appropriate
Mood
The atmosphere or emotional feeling
