What is Denotation?
The dictionary definition.
What is Connotation?
Reaction / Feelings / Ideas.
What is Context?
Context points to the things that come with a text, it is the situation through witch language use occurs and is understood.
What is a Discourse Event?
An act of communication occuring in a specific time and location. This involves writers / speakers and readers / listeners.
What is a Discourse Participant?
The text producers and text receivers involved.
What is Split Discourse?
Where communicating participants are separated by time / space.
What is Deixis?
Words that are context bound and whose meaning depends on whose using them.
What is Genre?
A way of grouping texts together based on expected shared conversations.
What is Audience Positioning?
How different audiences are targeted by text producers, resulting in different interpretations of the text.
What is Audience Construction?
The way a text constructs its audience.
What is an Open Word Class?
Where words can move in and out of classes. (sometimes called lexical word class)
What is a Closed Word Class?
Where words are fixed and do not change classes.
