Prologue
An opening to a story that establishes the setting an gives background details and other misc. info
Sonnet
- 14 line poem
- written in iambic pentameter

- 10 syllables in each line
Soliloquy
A character relates his/her thoughts and feelings to him/herself and to the audience without addressing any other character(monologue)
Aside
Dramatic device in which characters speak to the audience unheard by other characters
Tragedy
Serious play in which chief character passes through a series of misfortune leading to a final devastating catastrophe
Comedy
A play in which the characters manage to avert an impending disaster and have a happy ending
Blank verse
Rhymed lines of 10 syllables
Prose
Ordinary form of spoken and written language
Irony
In general a discrepancy between expectation and reality. What you expect vs what happens
Verbal irony
Statements that imply a meaning in opposition to their literal meaning(sarcasm)
Situational irony
Actions taken have an effect exactly opposite from what was intended
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows an unwitting character is making a mistake, often these actions cause our guts to churn(horror movies)
Pun
- a form of wordplay
- takes words that sound similar and plays on the difference to create a joke
- uses a word so it has more than 1 meaning
Oxymorons
Figure of speech that combines conflicting terms to create something new
Ex. act natural
Metaphors
Comparing to like things saying one thing is another
Ex. He has the heart of a lion, the meal was a rainbow of flavors
