What is satire?
Satire is a form of critical commentary on aspects of contemporary society. It can be used to mock or bring attention to specific issues or people in the world.
Examples of satire include comic strips with ironic meanings and short stories with hidden meanings.
Is satire a genre in literature? How is it presented today?
Yes, it is.
Nowadays, it is presented in the form of plays, news websites, cartoons, tv, films and song lyrics
Is context important in satire?
Definitely. Context is everything when understanding satire. We have to understand what is happening around the world right now so we could relate to their beliefs.
What are the 5 types of satire techniques? (Name as many as you can)
Exaggeration, Parody, Verbal Irony, Ridicule, Farce
Others include: Caricature, Situational Irony, Dramatic Irony, Diminuition, Stereotype, Juxtaposition, Burlesque, Black Humour, Allegory, Hyperbole and Inversion
What are the different types of irony? Define each of them
Situational Irony, Verbal Irony and Dramatic Irony
Situational Irony - The outcome of a situation is the opposite of what you would expect.
Verbal Irony - What someone says is the opposite of what they mean. (Intentional irony to mock and ridicule)
Dramatic Irony - When the audience knows something that the characters don’t (Intentional by the composer)
What is Parody?
A parody is a humorous imitation of the form or style of another text. The audience must be cultured though to understand what’s happening.
What is a caricature?
A picture of someone, where their appearance is exaggerated on purpose
What is Farce?
A ‘Farce’ is a comedy that is extremely exaggerated and absurd.
What is black humour?
Humour with dark depictions and meanings.
What is juxtaposition in satire?
Very close positioning of words, phrases or images that are completely opposite to one another
What are stereotypes in satire?
Literally just stereotypes - something people generally understand or come to realisation, when they think about something
What is inversion in satire?
The opposite of a normal order or situation. (E.x. Mouse chases cat)
What is burlesque?
A work that vulgarizes high-quality art. It makes fun of the seriousness of the art and is similar to a parody
What is an allegory?
A story that can be read on more than one level.
In short, a story with a hidden meaning under it. In satire, it has a hidden meaning of questioning contemporary society and mocking it.
What is the purpose of using verbal irony? What does it evoke?
Verbal irony is saying the opposite of what is meant. Verbal irony is used to emphasise a point, express amusement or show anger or frustration.
