Allusion
A reference to mythological, literary, historical person, place or thing
Ambiguity
Allows for two or more simultaneous interpretation of a word, phrase action, or situation, all of which can be supported by context of the work
Analogy
A similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them
Anecdote
A short narrative detailing particulars of an interesting event, or episode. Most frequently refers to an incident in the life of a person.
Antithesis
The juxtaposition of contrasting words, often in parallel structure
Complex Sentence
A sentence with one independent clause and at least on dependent clause
Diction
Authors word choice. Includes connotation/ denotation and levels of formality
Ellipsis
The omission of one or more words, usually indicated by ; not necessary if words are omitted before the quote begins or after it ends

The term is Latin to provide a footnote citation for a source that was cited in the preceding endnote or footnote. Similar to “”
Imagery
Consists of words or phrases a writer uses to represent persons, objects, actions, feelings, and ideas descriptively by appealing to the senses.
