Metaphor
Speaks of one thing as though it actually were another
Allusion
A reference to some fairly well-known event place or person
Parallelism
Consists of using the same general structure for multiple parts of a sentence or for multiple sentences in order to link them all
-successive use of grammatical patterns of words
For clarity, balance and rhythm, concise
Chiasmus
Form of parallelism that flips the original form around.
Key words repeated in both clauses, but in reverse order
Anaphora
A device in which the writer repeats a word or phrase at the beginning of multiple clauses or sentences
Asyndeton
Leaves out conjunctions in a list or between clauses
-is the deliberate omission of conjunction in a serious of related clause
Polysyndeton
Puts a conjunction between every item
Zeugma
A device in which unexpected items in a sentence are linked together by a shared word
-is the use of the verb that has two different meaning with objects that complement both meaning
Ex.” He stole her car and her heart on a fateful night”
Synecdoche
Use of a part of something to represent the whole
Mectonomy
Allows you to refer to something closely related to the actual object and use that as a way to referring to the object itself
Similie
A device in which the writer compares two things that are already somewhat related
