Stanza

Syllable

Free verse
Does not follow a specific rhyme scheme or meter, but is rich in imagery and sound devices
Refrain
A phrase or line repeated at intervals within a poem, especially at the end of a stanza
Style
The distinctive way in which a writer uses language
Simile
A comparison between two dissimilar things using like or as
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two dissimilar things
Personification
The act of giving human abilities to something that is not human
Imagery
Images and/or details that appeal our senses
Sound devices
Help create auditory imagery in writing
Rhythm
A musical quality produced by the repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables or by the repetition of words and phrases
Rhyme
The repetition of any stressed syllable and the unstressed syllables that follow
Alliteration
The repetition of similar consonant sounds at the beginning of words
