Poetic Device
Tools that writers, including but not limited to poets, use to enhance the meaning, rhythm, mood, or feeling in their writing.
Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement that isn’t meant to be taken literally/seriously
Stanza
A section of a poem. Could even be a single line
Alliteration
The repetition of a consonant sound, not necessarily the same letter, at the beginning of at least two nearby words.
Line
A “unit” of a poem. A line might be a single word.
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as; sometimes stating that one thing is the other, or describing one thing as if were the other. Used to show similarities.
Assonance
The repetition of a vowel sounds (not necessarily the same letter) within at least two nearby words.
Enjambment
sentence or phrase extends across one line of poetry and moves into the next.
Irony
When an author makes use of the disconnect between expectations and reality

The repeated use of some detail or technique
Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like the sound it names
