Enjambment
Continuing a sentence or phrase beyond the end of a line of poetry
Semantic field
A collection of words which are related by belonging to the same category
Connotations
The set of values or associations that a word has: in addition to its main dictionary definition
Register
The level of language- whether it is formal, or informal, standard or colloquial
Vocabulary choice
The precise words chosen by the writer. This choice may be expressed in terms of register, connotation or semantic field.
Tone
The atmosphere or feeling evoked by a poem
Structure
The organisation of a poem.
Poetic form
The physical structure of a poem- sonnet
Metre
The way to describe the rhythm of a line of poetry.
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the start of words.
Dialect
The specific way people use language because of the social group they belong to or region
Viewpoint
The point of view or perspective taken in the poem
Imagery
Language used in a non-literal way
Simile
A comparison made between two objects using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Personification
Presenting an inanimate object or animal as through it were human
