Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that stands in for a noun, often to avoid the need to repeat the same noun over and over. Like nouns, pronouns can refer to people, things, concepts, and places. (E.g. “her” or “him”)
Noun
Person, place, animal, thing, concept. (E.g. freedom, or Kentucky.)
Verb
Action word (e.g. to run)
Adjective
Descriptive word (e.g. shiny)
Conjunction
a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause (e.g. and, but, if ).
Interjection
An interjection is a word or phrase used to express a feeling or to request or demand something. (E.g. “Ahhhh”, or “grrrr”)
Adverb
An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb. (E.g. “quickly”, or “steadily”)
Preposition
A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. (E.g. in, at, among, with, and on)
Clause (dependent and independent)
A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate. (E.g. Charlie eats a shoe)
Independent: A group of words that contains a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought. (E.g. Andrew worked all night)
Dependent: A group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. (E.g. but he was still unable to complete the project)
Phrase
A group of words missing either a subject or a verb.
Subject (complement)
Subject: the person or thing (a noun or pronoun) that does the action. (E.g. John runs, “John” is the subject)
Subject complement: word or phrase that appears after a linking verb in a sentence and modifies the subject of the sentence. (E.g. Casey is his brother, “his brother” is the subject complement)
Direct and indirect object
a noun phrase denoting a person or thing that is the recipient of the action of a transitive verb, for example the dog in Jimmy fed the dog.
Indirect object is who is receiving the direct object. (E.g. I gave back his balloon, “his” is the indirect object.)
Noun Phrase
A phrase that functions as a noun. (A type of phrase)
(E.g. the red car)
