Clause (dependent and independent)

A

A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate. (E.g. Charlie eats a shoe)
Independent: A group of words that contains a subject, a verb, and expresses a complete thought. (E.g. Andrew worked all night)
Dependent: A group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. (E.g. but he was still unable to complete the project)

A

Subject (complement)

A

Subject: the person or thing (a noun or pronoun) that does the action. (E.g. John runs, “John” is the subject)
Subject complement: word or phrase that appears after a linking verb in a sentence and modifies the subject of the sentence. (E.g. Casey is his brother, “his brother” is the subject complement)

Direct and indirect object

A

a noun phrase denoting a person or thing that is the recipient of the action of a transitive verb, for example the dog in Jimmy fed the dog.
Indirect object is who is receiving the direct object. (E.g. I gave back his balloon, “his” is the indirect object.)
