English Paragrahs Flashcards
Lord of the flies: jack paragraph 1
Fueled by greed and power, links to dictatorship this twists him a mindset and allows the inherent evil to burrow
The quote “my choir” shows how possessive he is and how the boys don’t have any say in what he does -harmful demise
This could link jack to hitler in the war, something gliding may have had to deal with due to being a naval officer. Could link to the fact that humans have always “needed” something as in our primal instincts humans need respect from their pack or people around them so it’s infrared into him
Lord of the flies:jack paragraph 2
and how something will always be there to tear down society. “Bullocks to the rules” doesn’t care for society he uses his high class authority to influence the littleuns -rules through fear. Golding may have done this to show the reality of how vulnerable society is when put into the wrong hands as one person can do so much damage to something that seemed so secure. Could have also been to show how twisted of democracy can be as he would have seen soldiers being drafted into war as their higher ups gain out of it
Lord of flies: jack paragraph three
He’s a dynamic character and is one of the first that falls into the inherent savagery “painted faces and long hair” shows how his is becoming savage. “Awesome stranger” her admires the new him becoming this aggressive and twisted character. Golding may have done this as he saw what happened first hand in the navy as many soldiers were turning back to aggressive primal instincts to survive. Jack resembles one of these soldiers “going into battle” - with no guarantee that he will come back the same
Romeo and Juliet: paragraph one (extract)
Refer back to the extract and analyse
Helpful notes!! The Prince views the families as “rebellious subjects” with lost heirs, dignities and statuses, he threatens them knowing it’s the only thing that might stop their ‘fate’. He sees the ancient grudge as a punishment. Contextual links: male honour code, class system, ancient grudge
Romeo and Juliet: whole play paragraph 2
Exposition of the play “all are punished” no one can escape the effects even the innocents involved e.g. the distant families members of of Romeo and Juliet “ancient grudge” never ending conflict, built into the foundations of society destroying any innocence. This could have been done to show that conflict is a fate or curse put onto families-harsh,unforgiving, inevitable
Romeo and Juliet: paragraph 3 (1)
In the prologue it talks about “star crossed lovers” false sense of security as Romeo and Juliet never had any control over their impending fate, this could link to religion and going to heaven together. Conflict changed the families as for example with Juliet she originally knew what she wanted but was turned into a very worried and miserable person as conflict got to her, the families can’t escape the conflicts whether that be mentally are physically. Shakespeare may have done this to show that not only if conflict easily shown it can also be silent and strong slowly grasping the minds of the families heirs without them knowing
Lord of the flies: introduction
Golding presents jack as quite a dynamic character who is easily lead by greed and power, this makes him more susceptible to his primal and evil tendencies and leads him to ultimately creating the downfall of the island. This may have been done to show the ‘inherent’ evil in all of us and how our fragile society attempts to hide it but fortunately for jack it’s a whole new playground for his new aggressive tendencies to play in.
Romeo and Juliet: introduction
Conflict is a very prominent theme throughout the play, specifically in the families of Romeo and Juliet. The conflict twists the mindsets of their heirs acting like a curse destroying the dignity, love or any innocence that clings to the families of Verona. They realistically have lost all control of their fate and are now puppets to the conflicts new found ‘game’.
