Direct Characterization
When a character is being described (physical description or a description of what they’re like).
Indirect Characterization
Using a character’s speech or actions to show a their personality without saying it directly (the reader has to infer).
Dynamic Character
A character that experiences a change or transformation
Static Character
A stable and consistent character
Flat Character
A simple, one-dimensional character that the reader doesn’t learn much about.
Round Character
A complicated character that the reader learns a lot about.
Metaphor
A word or phrase used to describe something by calling it something else. “These shoes are fire!”
Simile
Describing something by comparing it to something else, includes words “like” or “as”. “The shower was as hot as fire.”
Personification
Assign qualities of a human to something that is not alive. “This darkness is evil.”
Hyperbole
Making a statement that is bigger than actual. “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”
Foreshadowing
A hint or a preview about what’s going to happen in the future. “The gun on the shelf”
Archetype
A character that has a specific set of characteristics or traits. “Hero Archetype”
Allusion
Using something that’s historical, religious or something outside the book to better describe what’s happening or to show an example. “Mountain as large as Everest”
Foil
Two characters that have opposite characteristics. And use the differences between the characters to help develop who they are. “Superman and the bad guy”
Symbol
A tangible thing that describes or stands for something else. “the conch shell symbolizes power and order”
