Allegory
a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
Pathetic fallacy
the attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals, especially in art and literature

where events are portrayed, for example, out of chronological order or in other ways where the narrative does not follow the direct causality pattern of the events featured, such as parallel distinctive plot lines, dream immersions or narrating another story inside the main plot-line.

A metaphor that spans more than just a few lines, it could hint at the underlying purpose of a novel

Giving characters more personality, allowing the characters to have an arc which can change their personality
