It expresses similarity between two different things. The comparison makes use of the connectives like, as, than or verbs like resembles, looks, etc.
simile
It is an implied simile. It does not use connectives (as, like, than ) to make comparison.
metaphor
It is an expression in which an abstract idea, an animal, or a thing is made human by attributing qualities or traits of a person to it.
personification
It is an overstatement or an exaggeration of an idea to gain effect or emphasis. The opposite of this is understatement.
hyperbole
It is used when the name of a thing is substituted for that of another term associated with it.
metonymy
It is a form a form of metonymy which uses a part of a whole or vice versa to describe or refer more vividly to something.
synecdoche
It is a statement that seems to be contradictory but is actually true.
paradox
It is an expression used to mean the opposite.
irony
It is directly addressing an abstract thing or concept, or some dead or absent person as though it were present or alive.
apostrophe
It is a way of describing a present or current condition of a person, event, or place by alluding to or referring to a biblical, historical, literary, or mythical event, place, or character.
allusion
What are the common devices used by poets to enhance poems with sound?
alliteration and assonance
It is the effect created when the use of sounds contained in words work together to enhance the meaning; thereby, pleasant to the mind and to the ear.
euphony
It is the opposite, as the sound effects of the words are harsh and discordant, but nevertheless, contribute to the meaning of the line in poetry.
cacophony
It is used to create a pattern of similar consonant sounds that occur in successive words in a verse
alliteration
It refers to the repetition of a vowel sound in successive words.
