Figurative language
The use of non-literal phrases or words to create further meaning in writing
Imagery
The use of descriptive or figurative language to create an image in the reader’s head

Words which are the most exaggerated form of an adjective
Emotive language
Language that is used in writing to evoke an emotional response in the reader
Hyperbole
An exaggerated phrase used to emphasise a point or idea
Juxtaposition
Two contrasting words or things next to each other in a sentence to show the differences
Semantic feild
A group of words scattered through a section of text which all follow a theme
Narrative perspective
The person that the story is told in e.g. first or third person
Narrative voice
The person who is the main focus of a section of text
Foreshadowing
Where future events are suggested or hinted at in a text
Motifs
A repeated idea in a text that has symbolic significance to the story
There can be a shift in
Focus, time, place, character or event
Cyclical structure
The text ends as it starts
