How are souls in limbo punished?
They have bugs crawling on them and eating them alive. They also chase around a banner with no purpose.
What do the punishments in limbo represent?
Banner chasing: the souls here lead a useless life not making any decisions on weather to be good or bad. useless life = useless punishment
Bugs: the souls lived as if they were dead. So they have maggots, flys, wasps, and other bugs crawling on them like they would on a bead corpse.

Who is Charon?
A creature/man who takes souls on his boat to the other side. He doesn’t take any living or good souls. We meet him in the 3rd canto.
Who is Beatrice?
A girl Dante fell in love with after seeing her once around the age of 9. She died at age 24 and Dante can’t get over her despite being married to someone else.
What is the punishment in lust? what is the significance?
Souls in Lust are forever stuck in a tornado being thrown around without any control. This represents these souls’ tendency to lose control of their emotions.
Who does Dante learn about in level 2?
Francesca: A married woman who cheated on her husband, Giovanni, with his brother. She blames her actions on a book.
Paolo: has an affair with his sister-in-law, Francesca, multiple times.
Cleopatra: mistress to two men, Julius Cesar and Mark Antony.
Helen: left her husband for another man. They set off the Trojan War.
Lancelot: fell in love with King Arthur’s wife, Guinevere.
What does Francesca blame her actions on?
She blames her actions on a book she read claiming it made her feel things that resulted in her having an affair and falling in love with her brother-in-law, Paolo. [Lancelot’s story]
What did Lancelot do?
Lancelot was King Arthur’s noblest Knight. He gave in to his lust, and fell in love with King Arthur’s wife Queen Guinevere.
Who is Helen?
Helen was a beautiful woman who left her husband for another man.The man with whom she ran off with was the prince of Troy, Paris. Her and Paris has combined actions set off the Trojan War.
Who is Paolo
The younger brother of Giovanni has an affair with his sister-in-law, Francesca, multiple times. He ends up dead along side Francesca once is elder brother discovers their affair.
What does “Abandon all hope you who enter here.” mean in the story above the gates of hell?
This means that once you enter hell you won’t be shown any mercy and will pay for all that you have done. Your fate will depend on the hands of others who are much more powerful than you.
How is the river in Canto 34 being made?
The river of hell is created by Dis’ (Satan’s) tears. As he cries to be released from hell his tears pile up.
Where does Dante’s quest continue after leaving Hell?
Dante ventures off to Purgatory after leaving Hell.
who is Minos?
A king who was kind and an overall great person when he was living. As a reward, he gets to judge every soul and decide where in hell they belong.
Who is “Dis”?
Satan, Lucifer, etc. He is frozen in his own tears at the center of hell. Without him there would be no frozen water where all the betrayer’s go.
Who is Judas
In the Bible Judas betrays Jesus Christ.
Brutus is who
Brutus is one of the two people who went against Julius Caesar behind his back and killed him. He is one of the three biggest betrayers in Hell according to Dante
Cassius is who
Cassius is another one of the two people who went behind Julius Caesar’s back to try and assassinate him. He along with Brutus and Judas are in Satan’s mouths as this is the punishment for being one of the three biggest betrayers.
