Noun
Person, place, thing, or idea (communism, treaty, Jesus, C/A)
Pronoun
A substitute for a noun or phrase (Bro, she, one, they)
Linking Verb
Helps predicate noun or adjective describe subject. (She SMELLS bad, They ACTED strange yesterday)
Action Verb
Express what a person is doing or has done (Mrs. Royal is LAUGHING while we STUDY for hours)
Adjective
describes nouns (I am trying to remain PEACEFUL)
Adverb
describes verbs (VIOLENTLY throwing things is bad)
Preposition
expresses relationships of time, location, etc (She arrived AFTER we all left, we are ABOVE her) frog on a log stuff
Conjunction
Connects stuff. Conjunction junction, what’s your function? FANBOYS
Interjection
Used to express a feeling or demand (Whoopsie daisy, Objection!, Oh well)
transitive verb
A verb that an object. (I CLEANED the car)
intransitive verb
A verb that doesn’t have an object. (I YAWNED)
simple subjects
Says what the sentence is about. (The ALLIGATOR chomped my foot off)
simple predicates
What the subject is doing. (I CRIED when the alligator chomped my foot off)
Direct Objects
Answers what/whom. (I gave Jimmy a trash BAG)
Indirect Objects
Answers to/for what/whom. (I gave JIMMY a trash bag)
Objective compliment
Describes or renames the direct object, can tell by the verb being used. (She called him a meanie, him=meanie)
phrases
a group of words in a sentence that doesn’t have a subject or verb. (In the box. Only one.)
verbal
a verb that’s not a verb. (PAYING bills is boring.)
propositional phrase
(I would walk TO THE 7/11 NEAR THE GAS STATION AFTER SCHOOL and get a slurpees WHEN I WAS YOUNGER)
gerund phrase
A verb that acts like a noun. (She hates his LYING tendencies)
