Round character
Highly developed character with many traits.
Character
Characters are the individuals who participate in the action of a literary work.
Flat character
Few traits and not well developed we know very little about them
Static character
Remains the same throughout the story
Dynamic character
One who changes throughout the story
Indirect characterization
Direct comments about a characters personality Physical appearance
Present the characters blights speech and actions
Thoughts speech and actions of other people
Direct characterization
Tells you exactly what that character is like
Theme
Underlying message about life and human nature that the writer shares with the reader usually not stated but must be inferred
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who’s involved in the central conflict
Antagonist
Principal character or force in oppositions to a protagonist
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
Diction
A writers or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentences.
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action of the work
Foil
A character that provides a striking contrast to another character
Foreshadowing
Writers use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in a story
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward the subject
First person POV
Narrator is one of he characters and we as the reader know what they know
Third person omniscient
Thoughts and feelings of all the character
Outside narrator
Third person limited
Only know what one character thinks and feels
Outside narrator
Situational Irony
What actually happens is the opposite of what happens
Verbal irony
The speaker says one thing but means another
Dramatic irony
When the audience or reader knows something important that the character doesn’t know
Flashback
When an author interrupts the story to understand the readers present situation
