Pun
Definition
A play on words in which a humorous effect is produced by using a word that suggests 2 or more meanings or by using a similar sounding words that having different meanings.
Spoonerisms
Definition
Words or phrases in which letters or syllables get swapped. Often happens in a slip of the tongue.
Bathos
Definition
A sudden change of tone in a work of writing, from the ugliness to the ridiculous that produces an anti climax. When done correctly it is done to be comedic and that it turns expectations around.
Innuendo
Definition
A veiled remark about someone or something that indirectly insinuates something is bad or impolite. It can sound innocent but have an unsavory meaning.
Irony
Types
Quick summary of each
Dramatic irony: The audience knows more about what’s going on than the characters. This heightens the audience anticipation for what’s to come.
Situational irony: what happens is completely the opposite of what is expected. This includes contradictions.
Verbal irony: when a speaker means one thing but says another.
Sarcasm
Definition
The use of irony to mock. Remarks that clearly ,ran the opposite of what they say. This is to intently hurt someone’s feelings.
What is the difference between verbal irony and sarcasm
Verbal irony like sarcasm means the opposite of what they say but with sarcasm it is intended to be mean.
What is the difference between sarcasm and innuendo?
Sarcasm i the use of irony to say something but it obviously meaning the opposite. Similar to innuendo it is mean. Unlike innuendo, sarcasm is blunt. Innuendo is a sly backhanded compliment.
Verbal irony
A speaker says one thing but they mean another. This creates witty humor.
Situational irony
Something happens that is completely opposite to what is expected. These involve a level of contradiction. This creates humor or a level of shock.
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows more than the character. Situations that occur can create tension and anticipation. This plays with the audiences emotions more with the situation.
Sarcasm
Using irony to convey contempt. It clearly means the opposite of what they say. Hurting someone’s feelings in a humorous way but this is mean and blunt.
Satire
A device of humor in literature that uses wit for SoCal criticism. Brings attention follies in society. Aspects include irony, sarcasm and exaggeration.
Caricature
A picture, imitation of a person (well known) in which recognizable characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect. Creates a character in which the cartoonist or society sees them.
Parody
A composition that imitates the style of another composition for comedic effect and applied to an inappropriate subject. It is regconizable to the audience and used for comidic effect
