Allegory
is a story, poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Alliteration
a sound device commonly used in poetry and occasionally in prose that involves the repetition of an initial sound in two or more words of a phrase
Allusion
a brief reference, explicit or indirect, to a person, place, event, or to another literary work or passage; 4 types: historical (he met his waterloo), mythological (to have an Achilles’ heel) literary (Steinbeck title Of Mice and Men) biblical (a “Daniel come to Judgment”)
Anadiplosis
the repetition of the final word(s) of a sentence at the beginning of the next. consider Yoda’s words as an example: “Fear leads to anger, Anger leads to hate, Hate leads to suffering.”
