Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces.
Characterization
The methods an author uses to develop the qualities and personalities of person in a story (HOW we learn about a character, not WHAT we learn about him/her).
Protagonist
The chief character in a story, play or novel.
Antagonist
The rival that attempts to thwart the protagonist.
Imagery
Descriptive language that appeals to the senses.
Point-of-view
The selection of narrator; the deciding factor of what and how much information will be told.
Narrative Point of View
The vantage point from which the story is told. 1st person narration means that the narrator is a character in the story. 3rd person refers to an outside story teller.
Foreshadowing
The technique of providing the reader with hints, clues, or indications about the future action of a story or play.
Symbolism
When an object, person, or place stands for an idea, feeling, or emotion.
Setting
The time and/or place in which the events of a story take place.
Personification
Assigning human attributes to non-human things.
Irony
When what is said/done is the opposite of what was expected.
Diction
Word choice.
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration.
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things.
