Point of view
Vantage point from which a story is told
First person
The “l” point of view
Limited omniscient
Point of view where we only know what one character is thinking.
Omniscient
All knowing point of view in a story
Cliché
An over-used and unoriginal expression. Eg. Cool as a cucumber
Objective
Point of view in which we know what the characters are saying and doing, but not what they may be thinking.
Different conflict types
Internal conflict- problems with yourself
External conflict- problems with someone else or the society.
Protagonist
The main character in a story or novel.
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration
Foreshadowing
Clues in a novel or short story of upcoming events or incidents
Irony
Verbal
Dramatic
Situational
Sarcasm
A form of verbal irony
Bias
Our prejudicial or narrow points-of-view
Tone
The attitude the poet takes towards the audience.
Jargon
Specialized words for a group or an organization. Eg. Teachers: lesson plan, class management, lesson pacing, reports cards.
Allusion
A reference in literature to a famous person, place, or event
Contrast
Opposite of compare. To show differences
Pun
A witty play on words
Aside
A short speech meant for the audience’s ears or a specific characters ears only
Soliloquy
A longer speech on stage meant for the audiences ears only
