What is a Metaphor
a suggested comparison between two unlike things in order to point out a similarity; a metaphor DOES NOT use the word like, as as, or then.
“The Snow Is a White Blanket”

a comparison between two unlike things, using like, as as, or then in the comparison.
I am as cold as an ice cube”
What is a Juxtaposition
a literary device that places two entities side by side to create a dramatic or ironic comparison/contrast.
Example: light and darkness

the repetition of grammatical elements in writing and speaking.
What is a Oxymoron
A figure of speech pairing two words together that are opposing and/or contradictory.
Example: quiet roar, clearly confused, giant shrimp
What is a Paradox
a statement that reveals a kind of truth although at first it seems to be self-contradictory and untrue
What is a Denotation
A word’s literal, dictionary definition.
What is a Connotation
Connotation refers to a meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing which it describes explicitly. Words may have positive or negative connotations that depend upon the social, cultural, and personal experiences of individuals. For example, the words childish, childlike and youthful have the same denotative, but different connotative, meanings.
What is a Hyperbole
obvious exaggeration which is not meant to be taken literally
What is a Litote
figure of speech and an understatement featuring a phrase that utilizes negative wording (sometimes double negatives) to ironically express a positive assertion or statement.

a word used to show emotion or surprise.
Ex. Ouch! Wow! Argh! Why
What is a Noun
words that name a person, place, thing or idea.
What is a Pronoun
a word that replaces or references a noun.
What is an Adjective
a word that describes a noun or pronoun. It often tells us which one, whose, what kind, or how many. [Articles (a, an, the) are a type of adjectives
What is a Verb
a word that shows action or state of being (i.e. to be or linking verbs, showing existence or links ideas).
