Mansfeld Expedition - 1624
A
- Charles and Buckingham returened to England determined to avenge their humiliation by making war on Spain.
- In 1624, James I managed to persuade parliament to vote for funds for war. An army was raised under Count Mansfeld and they were sent to regain Palatinate.
- The Mansfeld Expedition failed but the English navy continued to be strengthened.
- James didn’t declare war, Charles and Buckingham planned to. Charles then married an allianace with France, Spains enemy.

Cadiz Expedition - September 1625
A
- Charles I and Buckingham anti-spanish policy was popular in James I reign, the failure of the Mansfeld Expedition fustrated parliament.
- Charles continued to support the Elector Frederick and decided to send an invasion fleet to Cadiz, endorsed by the queens dowry of £120,000.
- The English were a failure, they didn’t get Cadiz; they didn’t get any Spanish ships; but most of all the sailors were drunk.
- Therefore parliament was parliament and blamed the Duke of Buckingham.

Attempted Impeachment of Buckingham - May 1626
A
- Parliament was blaming the Duke for the Cadiz Expediton, but Charles I was blaming parliament as they gave him insufficent funds.
- Sir John Eliot and Sir Dudley Diggs directed the attack on Buckingham’s impeachement.
- The testimony of the Earl of Bristol was important. He knewthat Charles I had bribed the Spanish courtiers but had promised to offer concessions to English Catholics if the Spanish match was sequre. Charles charged Bristol with treason. However, the Earl offered evidence that the lords that made Buckingham be charged with treason. When the hearing came about, May 1626, Eliot and Diggs were imprisoned in the tower of London. Charles threatened to get rid of parliament to save Buckingham.

La Rochelle Raids - 1627-1628
A
- Buckingham launched a naval expedition to La Rochelle.
- England and France was at war due to the seizures of eachothers ships.
- France and Spain became an aliiance.
- The english fleet failed so the fleet sailed home.
- During the years 1624-1628, 50,000 men had seved Buckingham, 1/3 died. Of 7833 soldiers that were sent to La Rochelle only 2989 returned.
