What is a civil war?
A civil war is a war within the same country
What is the ‘Divine right of kings’?
Its the right that kings rule alone
What was the New Model Army
It was Parliaments Professional army that was created by Oliver Cromwell and Fairfax.
(Fairfax was also the commander for this army)
What is a Puritan?
They are a strong Protestant
What was a Royalist/Cavaliers?
They were the Kings supporters (eg Price Rupert was a Royalist)
What was a Parliamentarian/ Roundhead?
They were Parliament’s supporters (eg Oliver Cromwell was a Parliamentarian)
What is a Republic country?
A country with no monarch (in this case parliament was in charge)
Who and what is the ‘Lord Protector’?
The ‘Lord Protector’ was the head of state. Oliver Cromwell was given this title
What was a political reason for the Civil war
Charles believed in the divine right of kings, whilst Parliament wanted some of the kings power.
What was a religious reason for the Civil War?
Parliament was afraid Charles had become Catholic, their evidence was that he decorated his churches and that he married Henrietta Maria who was Catholic. Charles denied these claims and stated he was Protestant.
What was an economic reason for the Civil War?
Charles asked Parliament for money, but Parliament wanted power in return, Charles would not give them this.
What was the deciding battle for the Civil War?
The battle of Naseby was the deciding battle (Charles lost and was executed)
What is the military reason on why King Charles lost?
Parliament’s New Model Army had defeated the Royalist soldiers
What was the financial reason on why Charles lost?
Parliament had more money than the king as they controlled major towns (eg London)
Who had more supporters during the Civil War?
Parliament had more supporters than the king (eg Scotland supported Parliament)
