Useful vocabulary before study
Noun
Words that name people, places, things, or ideas. Example: cat, city, happiness.
Pronoun
Words that replace nouns. Example: he, she, it.
Verb
Words that express actions or states. Example: run, be.
Adjective
Words that describe or modify nouns. Example: blue, tall.
Adverb
Words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Example: quickly, very.
Subject
The person, place, thing, or idea that performs the action of the verb. Example: The cat.
Object
The person, place, thing, or idea that receives the action of the verb. Example: the ball.
Sentence
A group of words that expresses a complete idea. Example: The cat chases the mouse.
Clause
A group of words with a subject and a verb. It can be independent (a complete sentence) or dependent (needs more information).
Preposition
Words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. Example: in, on
Conjunction
Words that connect words, phrases, or clauses. Example: and, but.
Article
Words used before nouns to define them as specific or general. Example: a, an, the.
Tense
Form of the verb that indicates the time of the action. Example: present, past, future.

Form of a noun that indicates more than one. Example: cats.
Singular
Form of a noun that indicates only one. Example: cat.
