Let & allow
What’s the difference?
The verbs let and allow have similar meanings – both are related to giving permission. But they’re not used in exactly the same way.
In the active voice, allow takes the “to” + infinitive , but let does not.
?
They let him ……. leave early to go to the doctor.
She let her brother ……..borrow the car.
They allowed him ……. leave early to go to the doctor.
She allowed her brother ….. borrow the car.
They let him leave early to go to the doctor.
She let her brother borrow the car.
They allowed him to leave early to go to the doctor.
She allowed her brother to borrow the car.
And that’s it, well done! You’re allowed …… take a break now.
And that’s it, well done! You’re allowed to take a break now.
Let or allowed
Are we ………….to smoke in the office?”
“Are we allowed to smoke in the office?”
Well done, this is in the passive voice, so we use allow.
No, but they …… us smoke outside the building.
No, but they let us smoke outside the building.”
Well done, this is active, without a ‘to’, so it must be ‘let’.
“Do they …… us work from home occasionally?”
Do they let us work from home occasionally?”
Well done, this is active, without a ‘to’, so it must be ‘let’.
Yes, you’re ……………….work from home one day a week.”
Yes, you’re allowed to work from home one day a week.”
Well done, this is passive, so we need ‘allow’ with ‘to’.
OK, but ….
-do they let us
-are we allowed
….. to take much time off?
OK, but are we allowed to take much time off?”
That’s right, this is a passive form with ‘allow’ and ‘to’
Yes, they …….. you take 20 days a year.
Yes, they let you take 20 days a year.
Well done. There’s no ‘to’ so we need the answer with ‘let’ in the active voice.
