English 9 - The Shape of a Story Flashcards
What is Freytag’s Pyramid?
The story structure recognized by writer, Gustavo Freytag, that consists of five parts that make up a pyramid-like form: 1) exposition, 2) rising action; 3) climax; 4) falling action; and 5) conclusion.
What is plot?
Plot is “what happens” in the story.
What is a climax?
The main situation or point of crisis in a story.
What is pacing?
The rate in which a story moves forward.
What is foreshadowing?
Advanced signs, hints or warnings of what is going to happen in a story.
What is conflict?
What are the main types of story conflict?
Conflict is a struggle or problem in a story:
1) internal conflict- a struggle with ones self (within the character)
2) external conflict- conflict with another person, nature or society.
What is rising action?
The steady increase of tension within a story or the rising action that drives the plot toward the climax.
What is intuition?
To know something immediately without conscious reasoning.
What does it mean to evoke?
To give rise to, raise or draw forth (as in feelings).
Why is conflict necessary in a story?
Without this part of a story, the plot would be uninteresting –characters would not grow or develop and there would be no tension or pacing in the story because nothing bad, uncomfortable or tense would happen to drive the story and characters forward.
