A phrase that tells more about a noun or a verb in the sentence;
Prepositional phrase
Tells more about a noun in the sentence; they look like a verb because they end in - ing, ed, en. They are another type of adj. phrase
Participle phrase
Are used as nouns in a sentence; they look like a verb because they end in - ing, ed, en.
Gerund phrase
Must express from one to two complete thoughts and have a subject and verb.
Sentence
Who or what the sentence is about
Subject
Follows an action verb and answers whom or what
Direct object
Comes between an action verb and direct object; recieves the direct object.
Indirect object
Comes after any noun and tells more information about that noun. Typically it starts an appositive phrase.
Appositive
Follows a linking verb and renames the subject
Predicate noun
Follows a linking verb and describes the subject
Predicate adjective
Comes at the end of a prepositional phrase
Object of the preposition
The person you are talking to in a sentence
noun of direct adress
Shows definite action done by a subject
Action verb
Assists the action verbs by showing various times a verb can occur. Past, present , future
Helping verb
Connect a noun or adjective in the predicate back to the subject
