Alliteration
words that begin with the same sound are placed close together
Allusion
a reference to something else outside of the book
Assonance
repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds within words, phrases, or sentences

very short story that is significant to the topic at hand, usually adding personal knowledge
Archetype
an idea, symbol, pattern, or character-type in a story, appears again and again
Connotation
a feeling or idea that a word has, in addition to its literal or main meaning
Denotation
the main/literal definition of a word
Oxymoron
A phrase that contradicts itself
Pun
a joke based on the interplay of homophones, or words that can mean two different things
Flashback
moves an audience from the present moment in a chronological narrative to a scene in the past
Flash-Forward
opposite of flashback, jumps to a scene in the future
Foreshadowing
gives audience hints or signs about the future
Hyperbole
a figure if speech that exaggerates something to an extreme
Simile
when you use “like or “as” to compare two different things
Metaphor
a comparison of two things without using like or as
