Common noun
Names a general noun; begins with lower case letter
Personal pronouns
Personal(1st person pronouns having to do with me; 2nd person pronouns having to do with you; 3rd person: pronouns having to do with everyone else)
Possessive personal pronouns
Singular:my, your, his, her, its, mine, yours. Plural: our, your, their, ours, yours, theirs
Adverb
Modifies adjectives (really cute). Verbs (run quickly) and other adverbs (very easily)
Articles
Words before nouns
Prepositions
Shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. (Across, after, against, around, at, below, between, by, during, except, for, from, in, of, off, on, over, since, through, to, under, until, with, according to, because of, instead of. Etc.
Coordinating
FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
Action verb
Shows action she wrote a note
Present-verb tense
Happening now( jump, talk, eat)
Verbal
Word formed from a verb but acting as a noun, adjective, or adverb
Participle
Verb acting like adjective (ends in-ing or -ed or any other past tense. I have running shoes.
Simple subject
The who or what of the verb
Complete subject
Simple subject plus its modifiers
Simple predicate/verb
All linking verbs are intransitive. All passive voice verbs are transitive
Transitive verb
Takes a direct object (We love English. English is the direct object
Intransitive verb
Does not take the direct object(Please sit down. Down is the adverb, not direct object.
Compliment
Completes the meaning of the subject and verb
Direct object
A noun or pronoun and is never in a prepositional phrase
Prepositional phrase
Group of words beginning with preposition and ending with noun or pronoun.
Object of the preposition
Follows preposition and tells what or whom
Clause
Each clause must have a verb and subject
