Round character
A highly developed character with many traits
Character
An individual who participates in the action of a literary work
Flat character
A character that exhibits few traits they are not well developed and we know very little about them
Dynamic character
One who changes through out the story
Static character
One who remains the same through out the story
Direct characterization
The author directly tells you what that person is like
Indirect characterization
You find out about the character through out their physical appearance, thoughts, speech, actions or by what others say about them
Internal conflict
A conflict that occurs within the character
External conflict
Character is in conflict with a out side force ex. Nature a physical object or another character
Plot
The sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action in a work
Theme
An underlying message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader generally it is not stated directly and must be inferred
Allusion
An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event or literary work
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and the way the form sentences
Fore shadowing
A writers hints or clues that suggest events that will occur in the story
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who is involved In the central conflict
Antagonist
The principal character or force against the protagonist
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward a subject
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character
1st person P.O.V
The narrator is in the story and when know what they know
3rd person omniscient P.O.V
The narrator is not a person In the story and knows the thoughts and feelings of every character
3rd person limited P.O.V
The narrator is not in the story and we know what only one character knows
Verbal irony
When someone says one thing and means another
Situational irony
A contrast between what the character or reader expects and what actually happens
