Round character
Highly developed character with many traits.
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of a literary work.
Flat character
Character that exhibits few traits and is not well developed.
We know very little about them.
Static character
One who remains the same throughout the story.
Dynamic character
A character who changes throughout the story.
Indirect characterization
The author may describe the characters physical appearance.
The author may present the characters own thoughts, speach, and actions.
The author may present pertinent thoughts, speech, and actions of other characters.
Direct characterization
The author just tells you exactly what the character is like.
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature that the author shares with the reader.
Usually not directly stated but must be inferred.
Protagonist
Mail character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict.
Antagonist
The principal character or force in opposition the the protagonist.
Illusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work.
Diction
Authors or speakers choice of words in and way of arranging them in sentences.
Plot
The sequence of events in the story.
Setting
Time and place of the action of the work.
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character.
Foreshadowing
Writers you of clues that suggest events that will occur later in the story.
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward a subject.
First person point of view
Narrator is one of the characters in the story and we know what they know.
Third omniscient
All knowing.
Knowing everything about everybody.
Know the plots feeling on all the characters.
Not a character in the story.
Third person limited
You only know what one character knows.
Outside narrator not a character in the story.
Situational irony
What actually happens is the opposite of what is expected.
Verbal irony
A speaker say sine thing but means another.
Dramatic irony
When the audience or reader knows something important that the character does not know.
Flashback
When the author interrupts the story to say what happened at a previous time.
